Summer League R8 – Shakerley Mere

Round 8 of the summer series was held on Shakerley Mere today. Not a good turnout with only six fishing with a few away plus with news spreading that Jimmy Byrne had been on and blanked probably keeping a few away. The conditions were good with mostly cloud cover and a descent ripple on the water later in the match also some big carp showing in the margins prior to the match starting. We decided to use the high numbered pegs starting from 50 working back missing every other peg.

The first couple of hours were slow with the overnight rain probably having a effect with only the odd fish caught but once it warmed up a little and the breeze picked up so did the fishing. In the last match a couple of years ago there was more fish caught but it was noticeable that the ones caught today were of a better stamp.
Mark Davies won the match drawn on peg 46. Biteless for two hours Mark eventually managed to put a run of small roach together fishing the pole at 12m with maggot as feed and bait. Although not hectic fishing in the end it was a enjoyable days fishing.

Alan Faulkner on peg 48 finished in second place again fishing with maggot to catch small roach plus a couple of skimmers.

Jimmy Byrne drawn on end peg 50 finished in third place with a catch of small roach taken on maggot. The biggest fish of the day fell to Chris Finneran with a 1lb 9oz bream caught on treble maggot on the feeder rod.

Big Beam Match Result 09/07/2017

Yesterday round 7 of the summer series was held on Big Beam pool at Fields Farm Fishery. We had a good turnout of twelve anglers taking part. Chris the owner had allocated us pegs 1-31 allowing us plenty of room so we pegged it out using alternative pegs from 9-31. At the draw everyone wanted one of the noted flyer pegs 15 or 17 at the top end of the lake with one angler even suggesting these pegs shouldn’t be used to make it fairer though I didn’t hear him complain when he drew peg 17!!!
The conditions on the day weren’t great for fishing with bright sunshine and little breeze but it was nice to be out on the bank in the warmth and although they weren’t the best conditions virtually everyone had a descent days fishing. Most of the catches were made up of F1s and carp with plenty of small skimmers also caught. Most caught on meat or pellet either fishing tight across or down the edge where the bigger carp showed up later on.

The good form of Geoff Burgess continued as he finished in third place, drawn on peg 21 Geoff fished across fishing shallow to catch F1s and carp on banded pellet.

In second place was Barry Holbrook drawn on flyer peg 17 (cough) Barry didn’t catch until the last two hours when the fish turned up in the margins to catch several good carp on meat and paste.

Mark Davies won the match from the other noted peg 15 fishing the pole on his top three with banded pellet to catch small skimmers and F1s then switched to the margins to catch a better stamp of carp on meat.

The backup weights were good with only a few pounds separating the top eight anglers.
