On Sunday 26th October Lymm AC Juniors held their final match of the 2014 Autumn Series and final match of the 2104 Calendar.

At the start of the match Yestyn Sephton was poised at the top of the league with an outstanding run of results with three wins and a second. The race however, was still on for second and third with three anglers seperated by 4 points.

table beforeThe match itself started at 10am with anglers spread out over two lakes. Two anglers Yestyn and David chose to fish Spring Pool while other anglers chose New Pool. With overnight cool tempratures a bit of midweek rain large fish where few and far between however silver fish were still on the feed.

First to weigh in was Alex Warham who managed 3lb of roach including a large skimmer.

Juniors: Autumn Series round 2

On Sunday 31st of August the second round of the 2014 Autumn Series took place on New Pool. With overcast skies and the strong likihood of a downpoor or two the match looked destined for an interesting affair.

The first hour was very easily forgotten as not a lot of fish were moving and overnight heavy rain it seemed had switched off the fish. On peg 14 Ben Fowler had managed to look a small carp shortly after the hour mark so everyone hoped it was a sign of things to come. Fishing opposite was last weeks winner Yestyn Sephton fishing a long pole, around 14.5m toward the island was fishing chopped worm and catching 8-12oz skimmer pretty steadily. Fishing light elastic he had the other anglers worried and yards of elastic would stream out. Fishing light elastic is very popular now with the introduction of pulla-kits. This offers soft elastic on the strike and while bringing the fish in but when you are ready to net the fish you can tighten the elastic by pulling on the butt end and land the fish successfully. There is a chain of thought that the least resistence given to the fish will mean the less the fish fights and ultimately more fish landed.

One of our youngest anglers James Dineley was fishing next to Yestyn and being only 7 years old he is hardly able to hold a pole at half the distance of Yestyn, that didn’t stop him putting together an impressive net of fish including some larger of the skimmers resident in New Pool. James began fishing the series late in the Spring Series and has come on leaps and bounds, you can see the excitement of catching fish of any size is still written all over his face.

On the other end of the pool Darius Burton was fishing his first match for a while after breaking his arm earlier in the year. His reward was drawing Peg 6 “Sarah’s peg” which is normally the peg which everyone wants to draw. This peg is the deepest on the lake and usually the holding place for the resident skimmers. Darius fished around 8m out fishing expander pellet while feeding micros and groundbait, he managed to string together a number of the larger skimmers however, was struggling with smaller fish and false bites called line bites.

In the later stages of the match is usually where the larger fish are seen, one such angler hoping for this was Connor Higham on peg 1. A removed tree in the margin is usually the hiding place for resident carp, he fed a number of baits in this margin hoping for a larger fish late on. Unfortunately Connor did not get what he wanted however, he did hit a carp only to pull out as the fish raced back to its hiding place.

In the end Yestyn Sephton was outright winner with 9lb 9oz while our youngest member James Dineley managed his first top three finish in second with 6lb.

Juniors Report: Start of Autumn Series

Sorry for the late report. On Sunday 17th of August we began the Autumn Series at Spring Pool Fishery, Whitley. The day itself breaks down as normal, beginning with the match draw for our beginners to advanced anglers, we have anglers from aged 7 taking part in this match. The draw is where each anglers picks a number at random which is where they will fish for the day. The favoured pegs are peg 1, 4, 6, & 10.

Following the match we have two sessions of our Academy, this is our beginners sessions. We provide all the equipment, bait and coaches to ensure that the sessions are busy, enjoyable and informative. We catch a range of fish mainly small roach and rudd however, we also get carp and bream show up.

The match begins at 11am when the ‘All in’ is called and the anglers are permitted to feed their swims and begin fishing. Many feed a maggot line at 4m to temp the small roach who are mainly up in the water and plentiful. Some anglers have a margin swim or island to fish to which is where the bigger fish reside. After speaking with Chris Liam Robinson who was fishing his first match on peg 14 decided to fish in two places. He fished straight out in front of him for roach and then another space (swim) out to his right where there was island. He managed to temp a small carp around 2lb later in the match while catching small fish throughout the day.

Yestyn Sephton was fishing on peg 8, normally an unfancied peg at the bottom of the lake however, with the wind in his face his worm and dead maggot approach was resulting in regular bites from bigger fish such as skimmers and tench giving him a 10lb 07oz weight enough for the win.

Ben Fowler drew peg 1, a noted small fish peg however, having a large tree removed earlier in the year meant that it regularly holds carp which can be caught down the edge in later part of the match. As normal Ben caught well on maggot a 5m and toward the island but it wasn’t until he came down the edge that carp took his bait and he netted two 3lbers. His total weight was 8lb 7oz and good enough for second.

Spring Series winner Sarah Taylor was placed on the fancied peg 6 or “Sarah’s peg” after she caught 17lb of skimmers back on 2013, she fished the same approach of pellets at 11m where the lake is at its deepest. She was getting lots of bites however, they were difficult to turn into fish in the net. Her 7lb 06oz of skimmers and one carp was enough for third.

Sarah Taylor with a mixed net catch including a carp worth 7lb 6oz which resulted in third place.

Make A Difference Day

On Wednesday 20th of August Lymm Angling Club (Lymm AC) hosted fishing sessions for Warrington Disability Partnership (WDP) and the Warrington Wolves Foundation at Spring Pool Fishery, Lake Lane, Whitley near Warrington.

The day was made possible through the Make A Difference scheme where Carlson Wagonlit Travel make time available for their employees to complete volunteer work.

Chris Finneran, who runs the Junior Section at Lymm AC, was able to use the scheme to host the day. Volunteers within the fishing club also helped – meaning that we had five coaches available to assist youngsters of varying levels of disability.

The sessions were based on two two-hour lessons open to anyone aged 11-25 years with little or no experience of fishing before. Lymm AC supplied all the equipment and bait for those who attended. Throughout the day we had six children who got their first taste of fishing and a great day was had by all.

Chris Finneran said: “It was a great day for those who attended. We caught fish and learned loads about fish and wildlife. The young people were made up catching fish and so keen to catch their next fish.”

Matthew Price, aged 15, was one of the young people who attended. This is what he had to say about the experience: “It was a really fun experience and I would definitely want to do it again!”

Laura Dunn, Sports Delivery Worker for Warrington Disability Partnership, was on-hand to offer support. She said: “When I arrived at Spring Pool Fishery I was welcomed by Chris and we discussed what we would be doing during the day.  The young people then arrived and were provided with all the equipment they would need for the session – including a box of maggots! – and all were then given the opportunity to try fishing.

Chris – along with the other guys from Lymm Angling Club – made the sessions fun and interesting and ensured everyone was involved and included. Advice and support was provided – when needed – within a safe and fun learning environment. By the end of the session everyone had been successful in catching at least one fish and it was surprising just how quickly the time passed! It was a thoroughly enjoyable few hours and all the young people commented on how much fun they had had and, more importantly, asked about when we would be doing it again!”
