Stansfields win Dads & Lads Match

The annual Lads and Dads match took place this year at Makins Fishery near Nuneaton. This formed part of a practice for the Angling Trust Cadet/Junior/Intermediate National taking place at the same venue in two weeks. We booked Lake 4 which is Makin’s big fish water with a large head of carp over 10lb plus huge shoals of 3lb+ bream.

The day itself saw changable conditions starting with overcast and a breif spell of rain before clear skies and warm weather. With the whole lake to ourself we spread out into 4 corners and the 4 pairs of adult and child had a section of lake to aim at.

In the end Ben Flower was top angler on the day with 50lb of mainly bream with a helping of carp but his partner Chris Finneran only managed to cature 23lb of carp with some bream meaning their total was 73lb. On the other side of the lake was the Jack and his dad who were catching fish for fish all day meaning that there weight was close together Jack had 37lb 1oz and his dad 37lb 10oz. The Hickman’s started perfectly but the fish seem to dispare in the middle part of the match however, son managed to beat dad. Mark had 11lb 2oz and son Kyle managed 16lb 8oz. Final pearing were the Sephton’s on the bottom of the lake Kev (dad) managed to hook some the monsters of the lake but failed to bank many of them he weighed an respectable total of 44lb 7oz, while son Yestyn found 16lb 1oz of Carp.

Sarah Taylor wins Spring Series

On Sunday 1st of June, the final match of the Lymm AC Juniors Spring Series took place at New Pool, Higher Whitley. The day itself brought bright sunshine, high temperatures and not a breath of wind. As such, the fishing suffered and the shoals of silvers failed to show in any numbers. The draw saw Richard Hansley draw the fancied peg and Kyle Hickman on the peg 4 times out of 6.

On his first match with us Yestyn Sephton drew peg 4 and fished across to catch an early skimmer to put him the lead. Not long after that, Josh Lyon managed to land a skimmer to draw level and keep the match close. Connor Higham managed to land a carp around half way into the match and hopes of another kept him interested.

In the series, long time front runner Sarah Taylor went into the match with a six point lead meaning anything about 5th place would give her the title. A tough match for Sarah saw a small brown goldfish but she could not put together any silver fish, meaning that she had a tense time as the scales come round. In the end a sixth place on the day was good enough to win the series.

Our series winner Sarah Taylor who had a tough draw on the day ending up 6th with 2lb 3oz . Congratulations for another series win!

Juniors Report: Round 3

Sunday 27th April saw the third round of the Lymm AC Juniors Spring Series taking place at New Pool, due to Easter holidays this was changed from the week earlier as scheduled. An overcast and unsettled day greated us, the water level had dropped an inch or so and this brought with it a slightly clearer water colour which didn’t offer the best fishing conditions. Due to the date change we also shared the water with club anglers so pegs were limited and high angling presure but it give the Juniors a chance to show the adults a thing or two.

Connor Higham joined us for the first time this series and as peged on the Academy pegs, normally these are stuffed full of roach and skimmers but has in the past produced some decent fish including some decent carp. Feeding small amounts of maggots over his rig it started to produce some small roach.

Juniors Report – Round 2

Round 2 of the Spring Series saw better conditions than the previous round. Rain looked on the cards but the strong wind had gone and a warmer day looked to offer better fishing.

Straight away fish were there to be caught and young Darius on peg 1, who fished his first match the previous round but blanked, got off to a great start with a string of small roach.

Young Megan Higham, who did so well last round, drew the fancied peg 6 and Nev Henshaw spent the day with Megan going through techniques to get the very best out of the peg. It wasn’t long before she was off and catching, using 4mm expender pellets over a bed of micro pellets feeding using a small pole pot meant that any fish would tightly shoal around the feed and offer bites to catch a number of fish.

IMG_0154

The best start however, went to Ben Foster who, on his first cast, foul hooked a 3lb carp in the tail and managed to scoop it into his landing net at the second attempt.

Callum McCormack fishing the same peg as the one he blanked in last round got off to a familiar start with bites being hard to come by. He ended up getting bites using his top 3 kit offering maggots close in. He managed to hook a big fish, however, using light elastic the fish got the better of him this time.

Sarah Taylor, pegged at the bottom of the lake, was quietly adding fish to the net throughout the day. The newly sponsored Maver angler put a really good net of fish together without a great deal of fuss.

Pegged next door, Josh Lyon could not get any big fish to play ball, however, he got on with catching some nice roach and skimmers.

Juniors Report Round 1

Sunday 23rd March 2014 saw the start of the Spring Series and Academy. A frosty, rainy and windy morning greeted us and fishing prospects didn’t look good. Throughout the day fish were very few and far between, however, a good turn out of very keen anglers meant that if fish were out there they would be caught. Jack Stansfield drew fancied peg 6. Image   An early fish and a few bites when no-one else was catching put Jack into the lead, however, there were still a few hours left. On the other side of the lake, newcomer to Lymm AC, Ben Foster, was using the long pole on peg 14 (car park) to feed a few micros and maggots ensuring feeding was kept tight. His 13m line to the island started to see activity around half way through and two nice skimmers meant that he overtook Jack for the lead. Next door, Megan Higham, who was fishing her first match, managed to sneak in a skimmer late on meaning that on a day where fish were elusive, she shot straight up the leaderboard.

Winner on the day, Richard Hansley, left it very late. Throughout the day he fished straight out in front for small fish and kept a few pellets going in down the edge which paid off big time! Two carp caught on GOT Expander Pellet near a recently removed tree stump saw him take first place with style. Richard did really well to steer the fish away from snags and sneak a landing net under the fish, he managed to lose one to the snags. Juniors Final match of the year

Sunday saw the final Lymm AC Juniors event of the year, it was also the final of the Autumn Series of six matches. Sarah Taylor finished 7th on the day after a bad draw which was good enough to take the title. On the day David Smith caught a carp, tench and two bream within four casts which was good enough the win with 7lb 4oz. Second place was taken by Nathan Brooks with 6lb 5oz mainly of skimmers and roach caught on pellet. Jack Stansfield came third on the day with 5lb 12oz of corn caught skimmers. As mentioned took the series title with 10 points from Kyle Hickman with 18 points then interestingly four anglers were tied on points and the collective weight meant that Alex Warham, Callum McCormack, Elliott Mavers and Jack Ross all on 29 points, Elliott and Jack also had the same weight.

Group photo of all that took part in the Autumn Series. Thank you to everyone that took part, all the parents for getting them there and all the coaches who helped throughout the year!

The year has been a very successful one for the junior section, we have had over 150 participants in our events. Our Academy Section who cater for complete beginners was really popular with six people taking part in the spring and eight in the Autumn Series. We have twelve placed open for next year. On the match front we finished second in the Merseyside Championships, 4th in our first national held on the River Weaver, our cadets finished 3rd in their age group of the same event. Hopefully in 2014 we will continue this success and build for better future.

We begin the Spring Series 2014 on March 24 and run every other Sunday for six events. Our Autumn Series will begin on 17th August. For more details see our 2014 Calendar

Juniors: Round 4

On Sunday 30th September saw round 5 of the Lymm AC Juniors Autumn Series on Spring Pool. This week it was all things pellet as part of #pelletweek supported by Cheshire Baits.

Spring Pool is the second pool in our two lake complex, the lake has a good head of Perch and Roach plus some large catfish. Hopefully the small number of Ide would play a part for bonus fish.

The day started slowly most struggling for a bite, Richard Hansley however, started feeding 4mm pellet and maggot and instantly found Perch he kept on feeding and in moved the Roach.

Jack Stansfield struggled for the first two hours and never had a bite before a move down to small patch of lilies saw Perch in abundance and racked up over a pound of fish within half an hour.

Series leader Sarah Taylor struggled on the first peg but after an hour hooked a monster fish, fishing light on white hydro, she spent more than 10 minutes guiding the fish round her peg before loosing close to the bank. Most likely a Catfish which would have won her the match.

Our next event and final event of the year takes place on Sunday 13th October. We also have a very special guest lined up to attend and present trophies. Keep your eyes peeled to Facebook and Twitter for clues to find out who it will be. So far the series looks all but going to Sarah Taylor but a turn in fortunes could see an interesting final few hours.

Round 5

Juniors: Round 4 of the Autumn Series

Sunday 15th September saw round four of the Lymm AC Juniors Autumn Series taking place on New Pool. The weather forecast was pretty grim with torrential rain and gale-force winds. This week it was bread week and all the competitors were restricted to using bread plus one other hook bait, many settled for sweetcorn which seemed to bring out the carp.

First to tempt a carp was Sarah Taylor who on very light elastic managed to steer a carp into her landing net, after a twenty minute batter both Sarah, the fish and dad Paul were exhausted!! Alex Warham was next to land a carp but only after losing one minutes before at the net. One person sticking to the bread bait for this week was Jack Ross who was feeding small pots of liquidized bread and fishing small bread discs called punch over the top, although he was getting lots of bites this was not resulting in fish. Ricky Teale of Matrix Tackle attended the session to meet the youngsters and offer some expert coaching, working through their tackle and refining their approach although it proved tricky getting the fish to switch onto the feed.

Further round the lake newcomer David Smith was fishing at 13m towards the island in a howling wind to tempt two carp on sweetcorn. It was a lucky turn of fate that saw his main rig tangle and went over toward the island with a margin rig which almost instantly resulted in the two biggest fish of his catch. Kyle Hickman was pegged next to David and was also lucky to hook and land a carp on sweetcorn, this time Kyle’s approach was set out for the bigger residents of the lake but unfortunately only one fish decided to take his bait.

Callum McCormack was on peg 1 and catching lots of small roach when his swim erupted after hooking a carp, only to lose it seconds later after the cunning fish found a snag to hide behind.

Academy

Sunday was the final session of the Lymm AC Junior Academy sessions, a four-week introduction course to fishing. The Coach led sessions go through all the basics to a point that each child is able to fish independently.  Freddie Didd caught the best fish of the day during the academy catching an early carp on sweetcorn.
